Across the country there is evidence to show that if a researcher takes the advice of their Research Design Service then they are more than twice as likely to have their project funded than if they do not contact the RDS.

RDS Masterclasses
The RDS will be running a series of masterclasses for researchers to develop their grant writing skills. These sessions will be free of charge to NHS researchers based in the South Central Region and will be focused around the skills you need to develop a high quality funding application.

Food allergy and intolerance day
This event will provide those with an interest in aspects of food allergy and intolerance in children, particularly dietitians, health visitors and GPs, with practical and up-to-the-minute information and case studies from leading UK practitioners and researchers.

There is a joint funding call about public involvement in research funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) through INVOLVE and delivered by the NIHR Health Services Research (HSR) programme managed by NIHR Evaluations, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC).

HTA call for Clinical Evaluation and Trials
The HTA programme is currently advertising standard calls for research proposals that address specific topics and funding for clinical trials and evaluation studies that are proposed directly by researchers.

Public and patient involvement in research can enhance the quality of research and research outcomes, according to a new report published by INVOLVE.

INVOLVE is funded by NIHR to promote public and patient involvement in research.  The new report: Exploring Impact: public involvement in NHS, public health and social care research looks at the impact of public involvement through an in-depth review of published literature.

Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB)

RfPB provides up to £250,000 for projects lasting up to three years. Projects must demonstrate a direct patient benefit. RfPB is especially targeted at improving local healthcare and does not necessarily have to have a national impact in the short term.

Invention 4 innovation (i4i)

i4i is designed to help bring new devises and technologies into general use in the NHS. Unlike most other funding stream it looks for commercial partners from the outset.

Clinical academic training for nurses, midwives and AHPs

Applications are invited for Round 2 of the NIHR / CNO Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship competition. The closing date for applications is 1pm on April 27th 2010.

The NIHR/CNO Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship is aimed at post-degree nurses, midwives and allied health professionals sited in England who have at least 1 year’s experience of clinical practice since graduating; have had sufficient research experience or research training to prepare them to undertake a PhD; and wish to obtain a PhD by research whilst still developing their clinical skills.

RDS-SC launches its new website

The RDS South Central recently developed it’s new website. Over the coming months this will become the place to go for research information, With help and advice on different study designs, to details of funding opportunites and information on conferences and courses that will benefit researchers across the South Central region, this new site will become THE place to go for all aspects of health research.

The event really highlighted the fantastic research that is going on across the South Central region and that there are so many more opportunities for researchers, both established and new, to obtain NIHR funding.

Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME)

The EME programme aims to support excellent clinical science with an ultimate view to improving health or patient care. Its remit includes clinical trials and evaluative studies.

The EME programme is an ongoing research funding opportunity and has three deadlines per year.

The submission deadline for consideration in the next round is: Tuesday 16th March 2010 (before 1pm).
